Start with the jewel your tree needs
This target suits minion critical builds using Time-Lost jewels. Disciple of Varashta is a natural fit: Baryanic Leylines increases the radius of non-unique Time-Lost jewels by 40%. Check which allocated passives your intended socket reaches before spending.
These bonuses come through passive skills in radius, not simply from equipping the jewel. Damage applies through small passives; critical bonuses and speed apply through notables. Very Large is useful when the extra radius reaches passives your build actually allocates; a bigger circle alone does not make the jewel better for your tree.
| Slot | Target modifier | Granted through |
|---|---|---|
| Prefix | Minions deal (1–2)% increased Damage | Small passives in radius |
| Prefix | Upgrades Radius to Very Large | Radius modifier |
| Suffix | Minions have (5–10)% increased Critical Hit Chance | Notables in radius |
| Suffix | Minions have (6–12)% increased Critical Damage Bonus | Notables in radius |
| Fifth useful mod · suffix | Minions have (1–2)% increased Attack and Cast Speed | Notables in radius |
The first four modifiers form the core. Here, “five useful mods” means adding minion attack and cast speed. An unrelated extra modifier also occupies a fifth slot, but is a different result. A fracture helps with crafting; it is not required on the finished jewel.
The five-mod route: rare mods first
The critical suffixes are the difficult hits: fracture critical hit chance, then roll critical damage with Chaos Orbs while retries are cheap. Leave the more common minion speed suffix for expensive desecration. This is the route illustrated by the recorded attempt below.
Keep this order in mind: critical chance fracture → critical damage → room for a third suffix → desecrated speed → damage and Very Large.
1. Secure the critical hit chance fracture
Start with a modifiable Rare Time-Lost Sapphire, not an ordinary Sapphire. Roll minion critical hit chance and try to fracture it, or buy a base with that fracture already present. Include failed fractures when comparing the two options: the first attempt shown below locks the wrong mod and has to restart.
A fractured modifier cannot be removed by the later rolls used here. That protection is why you spend it on a rare useful mod. An unwanted fracture remains protected too, so check the fracture itself when buying a base, not just whether critical chance appears somewhere on the item.
2. Roll critical damage with Chaos Orbs
Keep the fractured critical hit chance and roll for minion Critical Damage Bonus. The fracture survives these rolls. Secure both critical suffixes before paying for the finishing steps. Chaos can replace other work on the jewel, so an early damage prefix or radius roll is not something this stage promises to preserve. The checkpoint you want before moving on is the pair of critical suffixes.
3. Make room for the third suffix
A normal Rare jewel has two prefix and two suffix slots. Use Ancient Potent Liquid Contempt to obtain the prefix +1 Suffix Modifier allowed. Contempt can produce the other capacity effect instead, so check that you have room for a third suffix before continuing.
The capacity modifier is temporary: it makes room to add speed, but is not one of the finished jewel’s two target prefixes. Keep it until all three suffixes are present; the next stage still needs that extra slot.
4. Desecrate for minion attack and cast speed
Add and reveal a desecrated suffix, aiming for Minions have (1–2)% increased Attack and Cast Speed. The choice on reveal gives you more control, but does not guarantee speed. Budget for failed reveals and removing unwanted mods before trying again.
The recorded route uses Omen of Light + Orb of Annulment to remove the unwanted desecrated modifier while preserving the critical suffixes. It takes eleven reveals to find speed.
5. Finish minion damage and Very Large radius
With all three suffixes present, finish the two desired prefixes. Ancient Potent Liquid Melancholy supplies Very Large radius by replacing a modifier. Ordinary Large or Medium radius does not complete the target.
Melancholy cannot be used while a Medium, Large or Very Large radius modifier is already present. Remove or reroll that modifier first. In the recorded attempt, Melancholy replaces the capacity prefix while the three suffixes remain. Further Chaos rolling loses Very Large and later clears the replacement radius. By step 331, the prefixes are minion damage and cold penetration; Melancholy replaces penetration with Very Large. Prefix work can undo an earlier success.
Why prefix rolling is cheap here. A bug observed on patches 0.5.4/0.5.5 lets a Time-Lost Sapphire keep two prefixes and three suffixes after the capacity modifier is removed. In this state, successful uses of an ordinary Chaos Orb change only prefixes. Attempts to affect a suffix fail with “Item has no space for more Mods” without consuming the Chaos Orb.
A possible explanation is that Chaos removes a modifier, then adds a replacement. Removing one of three suffixes would leave two—the normal limit without the capacity modifier—so adding a new suffix would fail and the whole operation would be rejected. This is a hypothesis about the game's implementation.
This lets you roll the damage prefix while keeping the three suffixes, without paying for protective omens. You may need extra clicks because of the refusals, and Chaos can still remove Very Large.
This is observed behaviour for the setup above, not a general rule for every jewel or currency. Check it again after a patch before relying on it.
How do we know which mods to get first?
PoE2DB lists weights of 1 for these modifiers, but this does not establish equal chances: the site says actual weights cannot be obtained from game files. A weight describes how likely an eligible modifier is to appear.
Experienced crafters' trade listings offer a clue: the rare critical mods are often fractured or rolled first, with speed left for desecration. Those marks suggest an order, not numerical probabilities or a complete history of the craft.
Item level does not change the available modifiers in the model used here. This guide targets the right modifiers, not perfect numeric rolls.
The four-mod alternative
If you only want the core, secure the two critical suffixes and Very Large radius, then leave minion damage for desecration. You do not need the third suffix or its capacity prefix. This is a separate route; the detailed attempt below follows the speed version.
A failed reveal raises a cleanup choice: use Omen of Light + Annul to remove the unwanted desecrated mod, or risk a plain annul and roll a lost useful suffix again with Chaos Orbs. When the unwanted mod and that suffix are the only eligible removals, it is a 50/50; four total modifiers alone do not make it a coin flip.
Compare the omen's price with the expected cost of replacing the suffix. An expensive omen and cheap recovery can favour the risk; an expensive recovery can favour protection.
Is the speed upgrade worth it?
These are the lowest asking prices of matching listings in Forbidden Rites, manually checked on 15 September 2026. Every row includes all four core modifiers:
| Accepted finish | Lowest asking price · 15 Sep 2026 |
|---|---|
| Four core mods, no fifth | 130d |
| Core + an unrelated prefix | 100d |
| Core + minion attack/cast speed | 250d |
| Core + an unrelated suffix | 110d |
The speed version was listed for 120d more than the clean four-mod jewel. That is the potential value of the upgrade, before further crafting costs. These are separate sellers' asks, not a rule that adding a modifier increases value: a jewel with an unrelated extra prefix can be listed below a clean four-mod one.
The linked Advisor target accepts both the four-mod core and the speed upgrade. It can recommend stopping at four when the extra expected cost is not justified by the prices you enter.
A recorded attempt, including the misses
This five-mod attempt takes 331 crafting actions across multiple starts. It shows failed fractures, the capacity modifier, failed reveals and the final prefix work. It is one simulated attempt, not a 331-step recipe to copy.
Expand a checkpoint for the before/after items. Removed modifiers are struck through; additions are highlighted. Gaps between checkpoint numbers contain other actions. Spending follows the assumptions in What does it cost?
STEP 10 / 331A fracture can miss
Fracturing Orb
The first fracture locks an unwanted prefix. This attempt buys another base and starts again.
This action: 9.46d · Running total: 10.46d (includes action charge)
STEP 75 / 331Lock minion critical hit chance
Fracturing Orb
This fracture secures the rare critical hit chance suffix. Later rolls can search for critical damage without losing it.
This action: 9.46d · Running total: 32.54d (includes action charge)
STEP 279 / 331Make room for the third suffix
Ancient Potent Liquid Contempt
Both critical suffixes are present. Contempt replaces the unwanted prefix with +1 Suffix Modifier allowed, making room for minion speed.
This action: 15.85d · Running total: 98.72d (includes action charge)
STEP 282 / 331Remove a failed reveal
Orb of Annulment + Omen of Light
Omen of Light directs the annul to the unwanted desecrated suffix, preserving both critical modifiers. Several more reveal-and-cleanup cycles follow.
This action: 6.17d · Running total: 115.34d (includes action charge)
STEP 311 / 331The eleventh reveal finds minion speed
Reveal desecrated modifier (Echoes available)
After ten failed reveals, the eleventh lands minion attack and cast speed. This expensive stretch is why a single attempt can exceed the finished jewel’s listed price.
This action: 0.00d · Running total: 275.42d (includes action charge)
STEP 312 / 331Replace the capacity modifier with Very Large
Ancient Potent Liquid Melancholy
Melancholy replaces the capacity prefix with Very Large. The three existing suffixes remain in place under the modeled rules.
This action: 0.37d · Running total: 275.79d (includes action charge)
STEP 315 / 331Very Large can be lost again
Chaos Orb
Chaos replaces Very Large with ordinary Medium radius. Sharing the radius modifier family does not make Medium an acceptable finish.
This action: 0.16d · Running total: 276.16d (includes action charge)
STEP 331 / 331Finish with damage and Very Large
Ancient Potent Liquid Melancholy
Minion damage is already present. Melancholy replaces the unwanted penetration prefix with Very Large, completing the five-mod target.
This action: 0.37d · Running total: 278.92d (includes action charge)
What does it cost?
What these figures cover: the calculation starts with an empty Rare already in hand. Its initial purchase and preparation are excluded; later empty-base restarts cost 3d. Add the initial 3d if buying a base, plus any cost of clearing its existing modifiers.
The average covers both finishes: 159 of the 1,000 simulations stopped at the four-mod core; 841 finished with speed. It is not the average cost of a five-mod jewel alone.
The settings use Forbidden Rites currency rates from 15 September 2026 and a 0.05d charge per crafting action to value your effort. Spending below includes that charge.
1,000 simulated attempts
1,000 simulated attempts
1,000 simulated attempts
The predicted remaining cost was 202.81d; 1,000 simulations averaged 202.75d, with all attempts reaching an accepted finish. The percentiles above show how much individual attempts varied.
These are four consecutive saved attempts, all ending with speed valued at 250d:
| Attempt | Crafting actions | Total cost | 250d minus cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 349 | 292.63d | -42.63d |
| 2 | 198 | 79.80d | 170.20d |
| 3 | 331 | 278.92d | -28.92d |
| 4 | 215 | 102.48d | 147.52d |
Two cost more than the jewel's listed value. The most expensive of the 1,000 simulations cost 1,138.70d. That observed maximum is not a spending cap, and simulated results do not guarantee your outcome.
Let the Advisor redo the arithmetic
Currency, omen and item prices change the cheapest route. The linked target is ready with all four core modifiers and the optional speed finish:
- Select your league and paste your jewel. Check the recognised modifiers and the action charge.
- Verify prices on trade. Update the starting base cost, including preparation, and follow the target links to check comparable finished jewels and their numeric rolls. Enter a price for every finish you would accept; listings are asking prices, not confirmed sales.
- Read the updated cost and next action. The Advisor uses those prices and the available currency rates to compare stopping with continuing from your item.
